CPAP mask FAQs
Can I change my CPAP mask during treatment?
Comfort is key to effective CPAP therapy, and every person’s needs are unique. If your CPAP mask feels uncomfortable or doesn’t fit your lifestyle, speak with your healthcare professional.
Keep in mind: Replacing your CPAP equipment regularly can help to improve your sleep quality. Ask your sleep clinic about resupply programs tailored to your clinical needs
How do I know if my CPAP mask is right for me?
Your mask should feel comfortable, fit well, and avoid air leaks or marks on your face.
Signs it might be time for a change:
- You feel discomfort or pain
- You have frequent air leaks
- You sleep poorly or wake up often
- Your mask leaves red marks or irritation
If any apply, talk to your healthcare professional. They can help you find a better model for your facial structure and sleeping habits.
What’s the difference between full face, nasal and nasal pillows masks?
The design affects where pressurised air is delivered and how the mask sits:
- Full face — delivers air to nose and mouth.
- Nasal — delivers air to the nose only.
- Nasal pillows — soft inserts that deliver air directly into nostrils.
Full face masks may suit mouth breathers, allergy sufferers or those with a deviated septum. Try on different styles where possible.
How do I choose the right cushion size?
Each mask has a dedicated web page with support videos and sizing guidance. Many masks include printable sizing templates — print and hold to your face to identify the best cushion size.
Examples of templates and sizing resources are available on the product pages for AirFit and AirTouch ranges.
How do I fit my mask?
Fit your mask before connecting tubing or turning on your device. Follow the fitting steps in user guides or videos. Avoid over-tightening and make small adjustments while airflow is on so the cushion inflates into place.
Use the myAir app for personalised coaching and tips. If you're still having trouble, ask your care provider for help.
What causes leaks?
Leaks can result from poor fit, over-tightening, tube drag, wrong mask style or wrong size. See the related FAQ sections above to diagnose and resolve leaks.
How can I prevent mouth leak?
Mouth leak may occur if you open your mouth while sleeping or if your nose is blocked. Try the myAir app for alerts and tips. For occasional mouth leak try a chin strap; if persistent, consider a full-face mask.
Why is my CPAP mask noisy?
Masks make noise as exhaled air leaves the vent. 'Burping' sounds often indicate a leak — check fit and cushion placement. If noise is vent-related, consider QuietAir™ or quiet-woven mesh venting.
How can I prevent tube drag?
Tube drag occurs when tubing pulls on the mask. Lie on your bed and move to check tube behavior. Consider longer tubing or a top-of-head ('tube-up') design like Freedom masks if you need more freedom.
Which masks are suitable for sensitive skin?
ResMed cushions are medical-grade silicone (hypoallergenic). If silicone isn't tolerated, AirTouch masks use breathable memory foam or fabric cushions for gentler contact.
